OSM Map on Garmin Device

On Beginning OpenStreetMap manual, you have understand what is GPS device and how can GPS work as a tool for data collection. Some of GPS device have capability to showing maps, for example Garmin 60Csx, Garmin etrex vista, and also the recent one like Garmin GPSmap 62s, Garmin etrex 20/30.  Beside the standard map that might be included on your device, you also can display OSM map on your garmin GPS device. This will be an advantages for those who wants to do groundtrouth validation, more mapping, or navigating with your GPS device.

 

This guide will show you step-by-step how to download OSM map on Garmin map format for your Garmin GPS device.

A. Download Garmin Map Format

1. Openhttp://garmin.openstreetmap.nl on your internet browser and wait until you can see a web page like this image below:

2. Before you can download, you have to define your request.  2

 

  • Choose your map type: choose Generic Routable
  • Include a TYP file (Optional): choose Mapnik
  • Choose predefined country: choose country you want to download
  • Perhaps you’d like to add some additional tiles?

By default, if you choose a country, the grid on the map display will block all box based on your country selection. If you don’t want to download the whole country, or if you want to download a specific area, you can check Enable manual tile selection. Click Reset Selection to re-select your area.

The strong blue color indicated area that you’ve selected. You can choose more than one grid. Click Reset Selection to re-select your area.

  • Request your map or download it directly:

Put your email address on this column. Please enter valid email address because you will receive link to download the map. Then, click Build my map and you will see this page

3. Now, go to your e-mail inbox, and look for an email like this:

It means, your request already in process. The duration of the process is depend on server load. You can check how long until the map ready to download if you click the link shown on the image above.

4. If your map is ready, then, you will receive 2nd email like this:

Click link provided and you will brought to a download page.

Please note: Your download link only valid for the next 72 hours after you received the 2nd email.

 

 

5. There are several formats that you can choose to download. If you have Garmin software such as Garmin MapSource or Garmin BaseCamp, you can download osm_generic_windows.exe if you’re using Windows.

For general use, download osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip

 

B. Putting gmapsupp.img to your Garmin Device

1. Check that your Garmin is on Garmin Serial/Mass Storage Mode

2. Connect your device to your computer using the USB cable. Go to your microSD directory (for example H:/Garmin )

3. You will find a gmapsupp.img file. That is your base map file. You may want to create a back-up by moving it somewhere on your hard drive. Or if you don’t want to, you can replace this file with the new one that you have downloaded.

4. Extract osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip and copy the file to your microSD card (example H:/Garmin)

5. Unplug your GPS device and turn on your GPS device, you will see that your standard map is replaced with OSM map!

Tsunami Reduction Training in Padang, West Sumatra

An OpenStreetMap Training was held on 17 to 21 September 2012 at the Hotel Mercure in Padang. The city of Padang is affected by tsunami hazards due to their location on the west coast of Sumatra. OpenStreetMap will be helpful because it will help map critical infrastructure, such as public facilities, land use, roads, etc, that supports the reduction of tsunami risks.

Participants consisted of 22 representatives from BNPB, BPBD, NGOs and students of the University of Andalas. Mr. Yazid Fadhli, the BPBD chairman of West Sumatra, introduced the trainers and speakers. Then, Mr Henry Budianto introduced natural disaster contingency plans in West Sumatra. The first day’s training began with the introduction of OSM and to how to transfer data from a GPS to the computer.

The participants were very enthusiastic about following the material and learning how to use GPS devices in the field and on their computers. Overall, the training seeemd to be quite successful with only a few hiccups, such as tardiness, slow internet connections and lack of computer skills. However, it is useful to evaluate candidates for continuation in the future to be resolved so that the event run smoothly and successfully as desired.

The second day built on the first day’s curriculum with of the event is to collect data from the GPS, update OpenStreetMap data by uploading the changes to the database, create a JOSM preset that contains information about the building in accordance with requirements, provide materials about Walking Papers and sharing group for field trips and provide materials about editing with JOSM. On the second day the 6 small groups to practice the field using GPS and Walking Papers. The groups will be assigned to each location with a Walking Papers and GPS and collect building data.

On the third day before leaving for the field, the participants completed their first written test to recall the material that has been given previously. After doing the one-hour test consisting of 8 questions, the participants were divided back into 6 groups left for their respective locations. During the on-site participants to collect data such as building roads or other information entered into the GPS and Walking Papers. At the time in the field, there are many obstacles especially in populations that we went to collect the data. Characteristics of the population in each location is different there are enthusiastic and there is also disturbed by the activities we do in the field. This was overcome by the approach of each group explain ssedang activities performed in order to avoid misunderstandings later. After collecting the data the group returned to the hotel to continue the event is to enter data from the GPS receivers to JOSM and then make changes to the data according to information obtained after each group advancing to present any information obtained at the time in the field. Furthermore, participants digitised uncharted building according to the location covered by the Tasking Manager.

On the fourth day training event begins with the 2nd test consisting of 5 questions that cover material that had been submitted previously. After conducting the test, the participants went to the field again but with different groups and locations. The groups reduced from 6 to 4 with a more broad area to cover. Each group chose one location then they will collect the same data again the third day. Here the input data facilities at any location they choose various methods of retrieval from the recording using a car or on foot. After collecting the data, the group returned to the hotel to include data that has been obtained into the OpenStreetMap as well as edit the data. We had planned that after the lunch break the participants would return to the field, but because of the weather, training continued in data validation.

On the last day of training we focused on working with the Tasking Manager. We introduced the exported OpenStreetMap data available online: http://hot-export.geofabrik.de and http://download.geofabrik.de. After that participants did the final test containing 10 questions covering material from the beginning to the end of the meeting and filled out a evaluation of training. Then the ceremony continued with the closing prayer, the distribution of training certificates to the participants and comments from participants on this training. The next, and most important event, was a photo with all participants and trainers.
