Using Geo Data Collect (GDC) for Cultural and Historical Inventory

Inventory is an important step to protect and preserve cultural and historical objects. There are a number of tangible objects with cultural and historical value that are not listed, both in terms of its attribute and location. Enlisting them in a database is crucial to monitoring these objects. Pusat Dokumentasi Arsitektur (PDA) and Rujak Center for Urban Studies (RCUS), collaborated with the Humanitarian Openstreetmap Team (HOT) Indonesia organized a training as a part of Open Data for Kotatua Cultural Heritage Assetsproject. This training introduces OpenStreetMap (OSM) and Geo Data Collect (GDC) as tools to easily and systematically collect data from the field.

The training lasted for the whole day, 09.00-17.00 WIB, on Thursday, November 17, 2016. The training was opened by Elisa Sutanudjada as a representative from RCUS and was attended by 10 participants from PDARCUS, the Ministry of Tourism, technical staffs of Kotatua and cultural and historical sites experts.

What was the content of this training?

The training was started by an explaining what OSM is and its usage for various purposes. Participants were then introduced to GDC application and its features to collect data from the field, such as pinning waypoint, filling out survey form using smartphone, and capturing photos, videos and recording voice during field interview.

Other than understanding how to use GDC, participants were also trained how to create their own online form to be used in GDC. The online form was structured using XLSform. It is a standard form formatting to ease the process of making online survey form using number processing softwares, such as Microsoft Excel, OpenOffice Calc, or the online-based Google Spreadsheet. This will enable participants to create their own online survey even without having to be proficient in programming.
