QGIS and InaSAFE Training for Making Disaster Risk Assessment in South Central Timor, East Nusa Tenggara

After training about “Disaster Risk Assessment in the District of North Toraja, South Sulawesi” was held, the same training was also held in the district of South Central Timor, East Nusa Tenggara. The title of this event is “Training OSM, QGIS, and InaSAFE Disaster Risk Reduction Program (DRR) through the Project Strengthening Disaster Preparedness for Effective Response in the district of South Central Timor – East Nusa Tenggara.” This event was held on 13-15 December 2016 starting at 10.00 WIB to 17.00 WIB in the seminar room of Hotel Jatiasih, So’e.

The training itself is the second phase of a serial training course for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), which conducted from the collaboration between Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) Indonesia and Church World Service (CWS) Indonesia. If the first phase more focused on collecting data using OpenStreetMap, in the second phase the training focuses on how making Disaster Risk Assessment using software QGIS and InaSAFE.

The goal of this activity is to increase the capacity of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), especially in South Central Timor, NTT. 17 participants came from many organization, such as CWS, Gerbangmas, Sanggar Suara Perempuan (SSP), Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Indonesian Red Cross, etc.

Training phase two focuses on how to make a disaster risk assessment by considering three main aspects: vulnerability, capacity, and hazard. These three main aspects were made by calculating weight and scoring of each parameter that is composing the disaster risk. After that, participants were taught how to make a risk map using QGIS and also InaSAFE to calculate the exposure of data from a disaster
